Photography in the Winter months

Writer's picture: Natasha BoormanNatasha Boorman

During the winter months photography can be hard so in this blog post ill let you in on what photography in the winter months to keep myself busy when im not capturing weddings

Macro photography in the winter months

Macro photography is a photo taken close-up, usually of very small subjects and living organisms like insects or plants. In a macro photography the size of the subject in the photograph is greater than life size. By the original definition, a macro photograph is the size of the subject on the negative or image sensor is life size or greater. In some senses, however, it refers to a finished photograph of a subject that is greater than life size.

For me macro photography helps me to focus the mind and forget about everything else that's going on at the time such as Covid-19. During the winter months the weather isn't very favorable for most photographers as its grey, dull, wet and very little good light.

Macro photography requires a high aperture such as F/16 and up this will allow you to have the most depth of field, This however causes its own issues this time of year. due to the lack of available light you will most likely need to use an external light sauce such as a flash or continues light, you will also require a tripod to prevent any camera shake and leading to a soft image.

This time of year my favorite macro subject is fungi with roughly 15,000 types of wild fungi in the UK alone. Fungi live almost everywhere in the UK, but tend to grow more abundantly in woodland and grassland, I often find them within the New Forest off the beaten track. below is a gallery of various fungi I found while walking the New Forest last year.

Stormy b&w & winter landscapes

Nature’s raw power is nowhere more visible than on a coastline during stormy conditions. The crashing waves, turbulent skies, and unpredictable light create a visually arresting scene for photographers. Coastal storms can generate sizable waves and dramatic sea conditions, particularly if they crash against the cliff walls. However, photographing coastlines in such extreme conditions is not without challenges.

winter month can also provide some of the clearest sky which make for great night time photos, you are also most like to get dramatic sky's which always look amazing in black and white

Portrait photoshoot

When it comes to taking portraits I like to keep them as natural as possible using outdoor locations and natural lighting where possible, however in the winter month it becomes cold, wet and dark early making it hard to use outdoors and natural light. so during winter month i can often set up a pop up backdrop or use indoor locations and then use artificial lights.

Using artificial light can give you some very interesting creative choices, making it easy to control the light and manipulate it in a lot of different ways.
