Utilizing the Beauty of Natural Light in Your Wedding Photos

Updated: Aug 3

During this blog, we will explore the Types of Natural Light and why you should be utilizing the beauty of natural light in your wedding photos. Additionally, we will discuss important considerations when planning your wedding photography.

Understanding Natural Light in Photography

You may have noticed photographers using flashes on their cameras at weddings. This is done to add a bit of extra light when taking portraits. However, natural light is often the most important aspect of photography. It is a powerful and versatile tool for photographers. Understanding how to use natural light on your special day can significantly enhance your photos.

Types of Natural Light

Here are the most common types of natural light I will use while capturing your wedding photos.

1. Golden Hour

The golden hour occurs shortly after sunrise and just before sunset. Most weddings will have photos taken during the golden hour before sunset. This time provides the most flattering light for photography. The soft, warm light reduces harsh shadows and highlights, creating a beautiful, natural glow. Plan your shoots around this time to capture stunning images.

2. Direction of Light

As your photographer, I will pay attention to the direction of light. Different light directions create different effects. When a light source is behind you, it illuminates you evenly. Side lighting adds depth and texture to photos. Backlighting can create dramatic silhouettes and highlight your subject's edges.

3. Overcast Days

Don’t be discouraged by overcast days. These days offer diffused light from a cloudy sky, acting like a giant softbox. This provides even lighting without harsh shadows. It is ideal for capturing details and textures in your photos without losing out on harsh highlights.

4. Use Natural Reflectors

Natural reflectors like water, sand, or snow can bounce light onto your subject. This adds brightness and reduces shadows. I will position you near these reflectors to take advantage of the additional light or use water as a reflection surface for a creative shot.

5. Trying to Avoid Midday Sun

Most photographers try to avoid midday sun. The direct light can create unflattering shadows and harsh highlights. If we must shoot during this time, I will look for shaded areas or use natural elements like trees and rocks to diffuse the light. This can also create great opportunities for speckled lighting.

6. Silhouettes and Shadows

Experimenting with silhouettes and shadows can add drama to your photos. By positioning you against a bright background and exposing for it, we can create striking silhouettes. Using shadows creatively adds depth, dimension, and drama to your images.

Important Considerations for Your Wedding Photos

When selecting a venue for your wedding photos, it's helpful to keep these considerations in mind regarding natural light:

  • Time of Year: Different seasons impact the quality of natural light.

  • Natural Light Options: Identify areas to utilize various types of natural light.

  • Shade Availability: Check for shaded areas if necessary.

  • Backlighting Opportunities: Look for spots where we can light you from behind for silhouettes.

  • Sunset Timing: Plan around the sunset to capture golden hour shots.

  • Water Sources: Consider proximity to water for beautiful reflections.

Meeting Before the Wedding Day

I always arrange a face-to-face meeting with my clients, usually at their venue about a month before their wedding day. This meeting serves multiple purposes, one of which is to plan photo locations. Meeting close to the date allows us to assess the possibilities of light and decide which types we may utilize to create lasting keepsakes from your wonderful day.

Coverage Time for Natural Light Scenarios

When considering the natural light scenarios listed above, you must also think about the coverage time you have booked your photographer for. Some beautiful shots can only be achieved at specific times of the day.

If you desire lovely golden hour sunset shots, ensure you book a package with enough coverage time. Usually, a half-day or full-day package gives the best chance to capture those portraits. However, keep in mind that England's weather can be unpredictable. I always discuss potential weather issues with my clients and recommend backup ideas just in case.
